Great communicators understand there are two types of communication: Heart Talk and Work Talk. Wayne Reed will go into Work Talk in the next video, but it’s important to understand it is about making decisions. Heart Talk, on the other hand, is about understanding each other’s feelings, emotions, fears, longings, and ultimately deepening intimacy with your spouse. In this video, Vicki Hooper explains the process of Heart Talk to help you and your spouse better understand one another on a deeper level.
After watching video 6, follow these steps to get the most out of this part of the series:
// Step 1
Read and meditate on this verse: “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” (Proverbs 4:23)
// Step 2
Download the “Heart Talk” exercise that Vicki mentions in the video and go over the steps with your spouse. Remember, safety is essential for Heart Talk to work. If you feel awkward doing this exercise, think of it as “training wheels” for improving your communication.
// Step 3
Read the article “Engaging your quiet spouse in deeper conversations” for ground rules as the talker and as the listener in the Heart Talk process.
// Step 4
Read the article “Words that build trust in a marriage” by Mike Bechtle for six phrases that will make all the difference in conversations with your spouse.
// Step 5
Move on to the next video to discover how you and your spouse can learn to make decisions that are win-win, not win-lose.
