Let Your Love Compel You

You love your children, but do you always like them? That can be tough during seasons of conflict and rebellion. However, showing unconditional love and letting our kids know we like them, even when they have let us down, are critical pursuits.

Get more out of this series!

After watching video four, consider taking these steps to get the most out of this part of the series:

// Step 1

Read and meditate on this passage: “We love because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19 ESV)

// Step 2

Answer these discussion questions:

    1. Are there ways this week you can show an interest in your child’s world? His favourite video game? Her favourite music?
    2. “You are disrespectful.” “You are being disrespectful.” Why is the addition of that one word so critically important?

// Step 3

Spend time in prayer:

Heavenly Father,
May we grasp the importance of helping our children feel known and loved.
Even when they disappoint us, enable us to come alongside them with godly correction rather than harmful criticism.
As we rely on your grace and seek your wisdom, may our parenting point our kids to your initiating love for all who are in Christ.
In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.

// Step 4

Read the articleSimple habits that help your kids love you and listen to you” for ideas on how to show your child you like them and enjoy being with them.

// Step 5

Listen to the Focus on the Family Broadcast  “Showing Unconditional Love to Your Children” with guests Dr. John Trent and his daughter Kari Trent Stageberg.

kraked-video4Signals by Cherilyn Orr introduces the analogy of a traffic light to give families a common language for talking about managing strong emotions. As you teach your kids about regulating their emotions, you’ll learn how to keep your cool in the face of misbehaviour too, so that your kids can feel safe with you and remain receptive to your instruction.
