Finding God in the Trauma and the Recovery

For Christians and non-Christians alike, the big questions are: Where was God? How can he allow suffering? There are no easy answers to these questions but in this video, registered psychotherapist Tara Lalonde leans into the murky waters of reconciling God’s goodness with the trauma we experience to explore how God feels our pain, walks with us through trauma, and desires our freedom through healing.

After watching video 6, follow these steps to get the most out of this part of the series:

// Step 1

Read and meditate on this verse: “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

// Step 2

Download and work through the PDF “Being Honest with God Through Letter Writing” for a guided journal to help you talk to God about your big and difficult questions, much like the psalmist.

// Step 3

Ask yourself the following questions:

    1. Before you watched this video, were you honest about your anger with God or feelings of betrayal? How did that change after watching this video?
    2. What did you think of Tara’s description of free will and our God-given ability to not love him and cause harm to others? How does it help questions about why it felt like God did not step in?
    3. “God is still good, even when we can’t see it.” Do you agree/disagree with this statement? Why?

// Step 4

Read the article Suffering in Scripture: God knows and treasures our tears” for sections of God’s Word that allow us to cling to him and weather our worst storms, as well as offer comfort those going through storms of their own.

// Step 5

Listen to the Focus on the Family Broadcast Discovering God in the Midst of Pain and Suffering” with Pastor Timothy Keller as he offers perspective and hope for those times in life when trouble and hardship cause us to question our faith in God.

// Step 6
