Why Is Pornography a Problem for My Relationships?

Multiple studies have proven the negative impact pornography has on relationships, but what exactly is going on when someone uses pornography – whether they’re married or single? In this video, Luke Campbell explains how pornography skews our understanding of healthy sex and warps expectations, especially for those whose only understanding of sex comes from pornography. It also creates shame, leading people to hide, thus shutting down their capacity for intimacy in all relationships.

After watching video 3, follow these steps to get the most out of this part of the series:

// Step 1

Read and meditate on this passage: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light . . . and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” (Ephesians 5:8, 10-11)

// Step 2

Answer these discussion questions:

    1. Have you experienced the negative impact pornography has on relationships?
    2. “Pornography is poison in the veins of your relationship. It kills intimacy.” What do you think of this statement?
    3. Can you see how shame keeps us from being vulnerable and destroys intimacy in all our relationships?

// Step 3

Read the article Pornography, the brain and bonding” by Nick Stumbo to understand the impact watching pornography had on his relationship with his wife.

// Step 4

Read the article How to have a shame-free marriage” by Tina Konkin. Shame often makes the person want to hide. In marriage, this only serves to distance the couple from each other. But God has provided the perfect antidote: forgiveness.
