Identifying Anxiety Disorders

In the last video, Jenn Hall explained that for some, constant anxiety becomes a disorder. In this video, she goes into detail on the different types of anxiety disorders (Panic Disorder, phobias, Social Anxiety Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, etc.) and what symptoms may be. Before an adult or child can be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and find appropriate treatment options, it’s important for them to talk to their doctor to rule out medical conditions.

After watching video 2, follow these steps to get the most out of this part of the series:

// Step 1

Read and meditate on this passage: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6-7)

// Step 2

Answer these discussion questions:

    1. Do any of the symptoms Jenn mentioned resonate with you?
    2. Even if you don’t meet the specific criteria of an official diagnosis, can you see how talking to someone – especially your doctor – may be helpful if you’re experiencing symptoms of anxiety?
    3. Jenn explains that for some children, anxiety may show up as aggression. How may misdiagnosing a child as “aggressive” when they’re really struggling with anxiety be damaging? What can you do instead?

// Step 3

Read the articlesAnxiousness and anxiety disorders” and “Anxiety disorders – Frequently asked questions” for a more information on anxiety disorders.

// Step 4

Read the articleIs your child overwhelmed by anxiety, fear or worry?” to better understand how, as a parent, you can help your child open up and overcome their fears.

// Step 5
