Healthy Ways to Protect Children

Parents are right to be concerned about all the negative influences in our culture. But fear can lead parents to over-control their children in ways that ultimately see parents lose influence over their kids. In video six, Cherilyn Orr provides a better way for parents to protect their children from temptations that might pull them away from Christ.

After watching video six, consider taking these steps to get the most out of this part of the series:

// Step 1

Read and meditate on these Scripture verses: “. . . for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV)

// Step 2

Answer these discussion questions:

    1. How have you tried to protect your children from worldly influences? Has fear tempted you to over-control your children in any way?
    2. What, if anything, might make your children think twice about discussing a difficult topic with you? How could you help your children feel even more safe with you than they do already?
    3. How are you allowing your children to see your love for Christ and your trust in him?

// Step 3

Spend time in prayer:

Dear Jesus,
Fear of the world’s influence over our children can make us panic and act unwisely.
Lord, help us! We don’t want to drive our kids away.
On the contrary, we want to draw our kids closer to us. And through our example, we want to draw them closer to you.
Please show us where we need to fix brokenness in our relationship with our children.
May they see your unfailing love reflected in the way we love them;
May they see the wisdom of following you through our example.
Despite all our failings, may our kids always stay faithful to you.
We ask this, Lord, in your name,
Amen.
