After watching video one, consider taking these steps to get the most out of this part of the series:

// Step 1

Read and meditate on this verse: “And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him (Luke 15:20).

// Step 2

Answer these discussion questions:

    1. Take a moment to reflect on all the ways that your wandering child is different from you – in interests, skills, personality etc. What traits in your child have you always found difficult to relate to or understand?
    2. What changes would you like to see in your child? Are those changes related to their faith, values, behaviour or something else?
    3. Are any of the changes you’ve been hoping for not really a matter of faith or obedience to Christ, but simply to make your child more like you, or more understandable to you?

// Step 3

Spend time in prayer:

Heavenly Father,

We had dreams for our adult child, but our child has made choices we never expected or imagined.

You know how much pain this has caused us.

In this season, Jesus’ teaching on the prodigal son is especially meaningful to us.

Thank you for the reminder, from the prodigal son’s story, that you are our child’s father too and that you long for our child’s return to you even more than we do.

Please give us wisdom to know what to pray for our child day by day, so we are praying according to your will for them.

Amen.

// Step 4

Read the articleHow to trust God with your adult children” for a reminder from Jodie Berndt that God’s plans for your young adult may be very different from the plans you have for them.

// Step 5

Listen to the Focus on the Family broadcastBringing Home the Prodigals” where Rob Parsons encourages parents and churches not to alienate prodigals but to have a “prodigal-friendly” attitude.
